Overview

Serve as a key operational leader responsible for pilot training, standardization, and regulatory compliance across the organization. The Assistant Chief Pilot drives the execution of flight and ground training programs, ensuring pilots are qualified, mission-ready, and operating to the highest safety standards.

 

This role oversees Check Airmen and Instructors, leads new hire indoctrination and recurrent training, and partners closely with aviation, maintenance, and clinical leadership to keep operations aligned and efficient. It also plays a critical role in maintaining FAA compliance, supporting incident response, and contributing to the development of training programs, manuals, and operational policies.

 

The Assistant Chief Pilot is expected to lead from the front, balancing hands-on training execution with broader operational oversight, while developing talent, managing performance, and maintaining a high standard of accountability across the pilot group.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions and Responsibilities include the following: 

• Oversees and coordinates all flight training, ground training qualifications and scheduling
• Assist in supervision of all Company pilots concerning Regulatory issues
• Participates as a member of the Air Methods’ management team to promote a successful/safe operation
• Maintains Check Airman and Flight/Ground Instructor status in an aircraft under their purview
• Researches, develops, writes and implements training materials and examinations used in ground and flight training
• Conduct/Audit and supervises new-hire pilot basic indoctrination training
• Conduct/Audit simulator training
• Participate in suggesting ways to operationally minimize preventable aircraft damage
• Providing supervision of all Company pilots concerning Regulatory issues
• Supervises the Air Methods Flight Training and Standardization Department including the Supervisor of Training and Company Instructors/Check Airman. Including the professional development of the Training Department staff
• Ensure timely and proper notification of all signification training/operations issues (including accidents and incidents) to the Chief Pilot. When the Chief Pilot is not available, notifies the Director of Operations (President of Air Medical Services in the absence of Director of Operations) and notifies the proper authorities (FAA, NTSB, etc.)
• Participate in the development of the General Operations Manual, Company Pilot Training Program, Operations Specifications, exemptions/deviations to FARs, and aircraft checklists. Coordinate and distribute the revision of Company manuals
• Supervises and develops policies for Company Fight and Ground Instructors and Check Airman
• Assist the Chief Pilot in the development of the Training Department budget and keeping training costs flat or lower year over year
• In the absence of the Chief Pilot calls for, and conducts Pilot Review Boards for flight related issues
• Other duties as assigned

Additional Job Requirements

• Responsible for thorough knowledge of Air Methods’ policies and procedures, the General Operations Manual (GOM), pilot training program and comply with federal Aviation Regulations/Aeronautical Information manual (FARs)
• Be knowledgeable of the FARs and the Air Methods Corporation Operations Manual and other required manuals
• Regular scheduled attendance (potential for some nights/weekends)
• Indicate the percentage of time spent traveling

Subject to applicable laws and Air Method’s policies, regular attendance is an essential function of the position. All employees must follow Air Methods’ employment practices and policies.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Directly supervises employees in the Aviation department. Carries out Supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, selecting, hiring, and training employees, planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints and resolving problems. For Exempt Managers: Managers that carry out these responsibilities for two or more employees will have significant input in hiring and termination decisions.


Qualifications

Education & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree (BS/BA) from four-year college or university and five to eight years’ related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Minimum of 2,500 flight hours
• Two years of experience in a Part 135 operation
• Two years of ground and flight training experience

Computer Skills

• Proficient with Microsoft Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

• Airline Transport Pilot Certificate preferred (Airplane or Rotorcraft)
• Certified Flight Instructor preferred
• Certified Instrument Instructor preferred (Airplane or Rotorcraft)
• FAA Second Class Medical required if performing check airman or flight instructor duties

USD $108,500.00/Yr.

Maximum Pay

USD $162,750.00/Yr.
