Overview

Job Summary

The Director of Safety is responsible for overseeing, directing, managing, and implementing a fully functional Safety Management System (SMS) for Air Methods under the general direction of the Senior Vice President of Safety. This role is accountable for ensuring safety efficiency and effectiveness, regulatory compliance, and alignment with strategic goals. The position requires a hands-on leader with strong safety and aviation industry experience, proven crisis management ability, and a mindset grounded in accountability and precision.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities include the following:  

  • Direct Air Methods’ Safety Management System (SMS)
  • Maintain organizational compliance with FAA regulations, company policies, and safety standards. 
  • Support aviation certificate compliance through 119.69 (part 135) activities
  • Direct and manage execution of the SMS within the operational regions of Air Methods
  • Manage and direct all Regional Safety teams
  • Oversee and execute process and programs including, but not limited to; Field Safety Representative Program, Base Audit Program, Safety Reporting, Investigations, Safety Promotion, and Safety Risk Management 
  • Ensure all managed safety personnel have adequate training and are appropriately qualified to perform the work which they have been assigned
  • Manage relationships with representatives from all company departments, regulatory authorities/governing bodies (i.e., FAA, etc.) regarding the development and management of the SMS and safety programs
  • Act as the Air Methods’ Safety Department representative for HBS and ADM customers, when requested
  • Monitor key safety indicators and implement process improvements to increase safety
  • Maintain proficiency with regulatory guidance and requirements related to FAA, OSHA, CAMTS, and other Regulatory Statues
  • Assist the Internal Evaluation Program (IEP) team as required
  • Serve as the point of contact during critical incidents and major operational events
  • Other Duties as assigned

Additional Job Requirements

  • Indicate the percentage of time spent traveling – 35%

Subject to applicable laws and Air Method’s policies, regular attendance is an essential function of the position.  All employees must follow Air Methods’ employment practices and policies.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Directly supervises employees in the Safety department.  Carries out Supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.  Responsibilities include interviewing, selecting, hiring, and training employees, planning, assigning, and directing work, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints and resolving problems.  For Exempt Managers:  Managers that carry out these responsibilities for two or more employees will have significant input in hiring and termination decisions.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university in Aviation Safety or other related fields and ten years related experience and/or training; equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ten (10) or more years of operational experience within air transportation operations (medical preferred)
  • Previous experience as an air medical services pilot, clinician, and\or mechanic, preferred
  • Previous supervisory experience

Skills

  • Knowledge of Governmental Regulations (FAA, OSHA, EPA), CAMTS requirements, General Operations Manual, Pilot Training Programs, Safety Programs, Maintenance Administration, and company manuals.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Aviation Safety Management System processes.
  • Sound judgment and objectivity in decision-making
  • Ability to create an environment that demonstrates teamwork and professionalism
  • Ability to build coalitions with teammates and partners
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to develop, coordinate, and facilitate complex systems

Computer Skills

  • Advanced Microsoft Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Experience in Analytical solutions (Power BI)
  • Experience in Database solutions (Smartsheet)

USD $130,000.00/Yr.

Maximum Pay
